I've never been a fan myself, but I acquired a couple in a job lot a while back.

I loved the videos for I can't dance and Jesus he knows me. (though zappa's 'heavenly bank account' from YAWYImade the satirical point much better, IMO)

I just cannot understand the PG era cult following - complete hippy drivel IMO.

Wind & Wuthering & Trick of The Tail have got the best tunes in a 'your mum would like it' sort of way

Well didn't Fish once admit genesis were one of the greatest influences in his writing. I recall in the early days they were called the New genesis.

Quite like Trespass - not the classic line up of the group, but still has some good tunes on & is an under rated album imho. My favourite tune isThe Knife.

Not heard a lot of Trick of the tail or Lamb lies down though.

I saw Genesis in 1984 at the Bham NEC. Charles (The Guaranteed Eternal Sanctuary Man) and Diana (How Dare I Be So Beautiful) were there in a box, with appointed guests the Eleventh Earl of Mar and Mad Man Moon. They enjoyed The Cinema Show although at one point became Entangled in the security rope. Di complained about the ticket prices, saying it was downright Robbery, Assault and Battery. At one point they argued briefly about how many clothes she was buying. Charles countered with 'I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) The Lady Lies". In The Glow of the Night it was rumoured she had an Invisible Touch and Charles was badly smitten and In Too Deep. He emerged with an Afterglow for all to see and in the dark Land of Confusion said Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, Follow You Follow Me or we'll never Get 'Em Out By Friday." After the Ordeal Charles said "I've had a wonderful time, but this wasn't it."

I adore Genesis me.

Same here. Only the main TV has the cable channels and the mrs and daughter are watching a DVD. Besides, I'm not keen on their later concerts and they had lost their touch by the time of the Invisible Touch album. I prefer them before Hackett left.

Any Hackett fans here? I'm a Hackett nut.

Not sure about the description of those tunes, but yes so absolutely, those two albums areI think, Genesis at their creative best.

The early albums do have some good moments but the word "drivel" was used earlier and do I think that is both appropriate and amusing. Maybe at the time it was done people got into it as much because it was pretty new and different. But musically, most of it was shite.

Gabriel is a talent and is an innovative writer/musician for sure but in Genesis terms it was after he left that the band moved on to produce really quality music, IMO.

That middle period, when Wind & Wuthering and Trick of the Tail came out, has been the era that stood the test of time. No, they are not as well known as some 80's and 90's popular hits, but in musical appreciation terms I believe they are the finest.

You can't really appreciate what they are like by Amazon sampling, but they are now cheap to buy ( and possibhly now improved sonically ) so if you are curious, just go and buy them.

A Trick of the Tail was a turning point for the band. The writing improved and the emphasis was on the music instead of showcasing the band's cleverness. I still enjoy the Gabriel era albums though.

Look what i got free in the sunday MAIL:666gr:can i mention that paper here ?

From the cover.

THE ELDERS: Global elders for a global village.

"As our world rapidly evolves to one global village, there is need for a group of well respected leaders who will use their wisdom, leadership and moral courage to help make our planet a more peaceful, healthy and equitable place to live.

Peter Gabriel is donating all the revenues from this cover mount to support the development of this idea."

I have all his work (i think) but this will be good for the car, it has "i grieve" one of my fav PG tracks.

P.s.

Well a few hours on i can say that for once the "givaway cd" is excellent, i read the independant but mrs thru has the mail for all the cd`s they give out ( take that etc).

It has some remixes that are very good, i`m nicking this one.

Yet with that shift I would say they actually showed more cleverness. It just came out less wooden and pretentious; more fluid and musical. I think Tony Banks had a lot to do with that. I also liked the production on those albums in that period.

Just bought the SACDs of 3, So & Passsion: Fwaaaaaak me, but they sound awesome! May have to investigate more of that re-master/issue series. And cheaper direct from WOMAD than anywhere else I could find (or did I not look very hard?).

TIU

I am tempted by these remastered albums and have bought a few by Genesis and other artists. What I find though is as good as they undoubtedly are, they are still the same album, which invariably I have played to death. Because of this over familiarity I only play them once or twice and then crave something I haven't heard before.

Can you listen to the SACD layer Boxer or do you play the redbook layer? Have you bought the remastered vinyl as well?

Boxer
23rd June 2007, 19:23
The McIntosh is an SACD player, so "YES"!

SACD layer is an improvement on the red book layer (more "relaxed", less harsh in the treble & mid, but greater extension & not losing any impact); can only otherwise compare with my old copy of 3 from when it first came out...Never had any of these on CD.

Hi-FI Porn Issue 24 has an interview with PG, & features/comparisons of the different re-issues: Master Gregory preferred the heavy weight vinyl....but the SACD was generally preferred to CD.

Yes they are still going and yes they still have two lead guitarists. I saw them last month at The Ferry in Glasgow and they were excelllent.

Only original member left is Andy Powell (think Harry Hill's dad and you get the picture). The other guitarist is a Finnish bloke - Manny Mainanen, Bob Peake on bass. Didnt catch the drummer's name - I think he was new.

Played some of First album, a bit of Pilgrimage and a load of Argus with some newer stuff from Clan Destiny thrown in. They tour about once a year so you should be able to catch them.
