hi guys well i know nothing at all regarding different needles so looking for some guidance ,
i have a orfoton mc 30 which i like but it might be done , not sure any way i run two decks , so i am looking to get advice on the other one first it is a system deck early model , with a funny little arm the standard issue but it runs a rega bias old cheaper modek that i do like , so i know i can buy a modern replacement but alsinterested in some cheaper say £30 to £40 replacements.

i was in a shop recently and assured that a old shure 75 cartridge would be easily a match for the rega , obviously the shop was keen to sell me a old body and he assures me a new old needle , big selling point seemed to be it would track anything , not i would think is usually a issue ?is it .

what about a of=rfoton 10 or 20 model prehaps one of you guys has one that you are not using , i mislaid a body for the om10 from a old pionner pl12 , but it used to go alright .

the proff did recommed a cartridge for £30 but io cannot for the life of me remeber what it was .

the om 30 doesent seemed to be listed at all in the magazines for a replacement needle , so hoping one of you might have a low usage or un used one to sell me .

i am very soon getting my other deck to j7 to do the buisness on so i will de spending funds on his tinkerings to improve things rather tha a great deal on the needles.

certainly not interested in going moving coil route , happy enough with the few cartridges i have had ,

advice on the shure m 75 !!!! it is a lod bird and i wonder if it is still a contender ?? if yes what price might i be expected to pay ??

the rega is about £60 new which if i need to i would go to this much .

regards

The shure is an old cartridge. hwad one on my dads PL12D and that was 30 years ago. I reckon the ortofons or perhaps the Denon DL110 or 160 at a bit more (around £70) will give you a better sound.

hi eddie , thanks for that i get the feeling the chap was really trying to get ride of a bit of old stock , i shall however keep an open mind at the moment ,

i know a lot of you peeps use £100 plus carteidges , i will have to wait a while to head down that , i think if the om30 is not done i will try to get a spare needle from somewhere.
the om30 took about 40 hours to lose its edge as far as i could hear which was really compounded by the purchase of full size atc speakers which at the same time also took nearly a bloody year to loosen up a bit , but this is according to my ears other peeps might think this is booolocks , a hard few months any way .cheap trebble as well??

lovely.

The Denon really is a great cartridge & a totally unreal pice tag to boot. You can get these dirt cheap if you shop arround, Harrow Audio are the cheapest i seen...Would be an improvement over the shure. It's an High output moving coil so will just plug in you 47K Magnetic input...

Hi, I've found the Denons need a bit of work to set up properly which is maybe why opinions are so divided about them.

I suspect the problem is that they are quite a low-compliance cartridge in a very light body.
The easiest answer seems to be add a bit of weight to bring up the effective mass, like thin lead or copper sandwich plate between cartridge and headshell. Easy and cheap fix!
