i do like a tweek , it gives me lots of pleasure!!

so thank you esk for a lovely set of cheesys balls and cups got them under me amp and have i swear mad a small but nice tonal differance , not sure how or why but i do recon i can hear the possative benafit , but also they were a gift so that is double bang for me ears and a lovely reminder , some things can give you more than the money can .

my alchamist has always had a small backgroung main tranformmer hum thing going on , two seperate sideds to the main from what i can see , with the balls in place the hum , movement is being it seems damped better or more away from the ear region , what ever , a small improvement in me home made wooden feet and felt pads.

if only i could get me nice pre amp sound of the alhcamist amp fired in to my mossfet 500 watt amp and get the amp to stop humming i would be in heaven , i think??

well you know guys what its like on the upgrade buss a bumpy ride some times .

so many things to have a go at ,

jazzbass

next stop my lovely new to me phono stage , plinth for me thorens to get me bass notes thumping along nicely , going to ring a chap about this soon , he makes nice kit, but also has a workshop full of big wood work toys.

morning JB,
Ritchie are you saying your Alchemist amp has stopped humming since you put squidgey balls under it.
If so I wouldn't mind if you could tell me what balls your using cos my DK amp hums like a bee hive.
I recently moved my amp out of my rack to make way for a slate plinth that was surplus and then put amp back into rack sitting ontop the plinth. It was then I noticed the hum. So, I dont know if it was there before or is it possible the slate plinth in some way is exaggerating the hum. Not only that but the hum that comes from my amp can be heard in my speakers.
Obviously the hum from the speakers cant be heard when there's music going through them but still, its a bit annoying.
If anyone else has a solution to get rid of the hum it would be appreciated.

cheers

jesus sounds loke you got a real bee hive there,

mine was nothing as bad as that just the usul main frequency sort of physical thing , not at all sure yous will need a bigger help , i was not getting it in the speakers ,

i sort of think the two main tranformers in mine are kicking up a small party between them , but not bad at all ,

just as i said the metal cups and roller balls , ball bearings floating ib them under me amp seems to have help to get things hummoing out of me ears .

i also tred the sorbathane things proff suggested not bad also , £13 a set . flee bay .

you buzz sounds a bigger issue , is you house giving too much juice you might well be surprissed if you live near the power station , plylon .

the board will test for free if you tell em it keeps blowing fuses , i had my last place on test for a week , with a paper trace read out , very interesting , up and down like a brides night clothes

those dk amps are huge , !!!! take the thing back , mind you you need a good dealer some of the buggers are less than useless after they got you bucks , the proff excepted and of coure the guys on hear .

mr j 7 has just got a load of good karma from this house .

i have been doing lots and lots of listenning fiddling over the last wee while some very nice finds , poss try to look for another amp , down grade , side move etc , you might get some money in the bank , my stuff is usually the cheaper end of things so it doesent work like that for me .

still occasionally slip in me naim two box , a bit of a riot in the lugs , i am lucky i have the time , and the space ,

still also using my 30 year od sony receiver i got for a second system !!!!honest if i had a pair of the proffs small arts and it drove them ok , i recon it would sound very acceptable , i think the speakers are a big thing to get ticked , funny as i dont have much of a set at the moment in many ways

i often get me cans on .

whoops of topic .

no help re your humming .

I might have exagerated my humming amp abit Ritchie. There is a hum but its only heard when I'm close up to amp and speakers.
I dont think its a problem whereby the amp needs to go back to the dealer. I think its just yer usual transformer hum. I was just looking fow a way to reduce it.

I'm not looking for a new amp just yet but when I do it certainly wont be a down grade or a side move and I can definately say whatever I do it wont "get some money in the bank". I dont know where you shop for hifi but when I do it never involves money going into the bank, its the exact opposite to be precise. :D

How can it be my mains,
I've either got power or I dont.
I'm not sure getting a sparky in to check my mains would help.
What is there to check? How do you check?
I use a minisub GII, should that not remove any nasties from my mains anyway.
Oh..forgot to mention, I live almost spitting distance from the power boards transformer.

Could be a poor earth connection at the consumer unit or a loose earth in the socket for your hifi. A minisub wont cure that.

I had mains hum and I found that the earth connection at the box was loose so i tightened it. Result.....no more hum.

note...don't do this yuorself unless you are sure of what you are doing.

i find a bit of saturday night ram rading at the galye shopping centre usually works a treat for me cds and you can also get you fags and hifi while your out , not much time for window shopping got keep a eye out for the rossers.

i know what you mean re wallet getting plundered , i have not been doing to bad lately even a couple of free things to try , !!!! cannot beat that , i got a cup of tea and a nice slice of cake the last outing .

my fav shop isnt going to get a face lift on me spends , and free advice doesent pay the bills or feed the chaps kids> you dont get many caloiries with thanks and good will.

still i always hope to steer people in proffs direction.

still annoying even a quiet humm thing , i recon your slate is amplifiying it , .

a bit like a tunning fork held on a dinning room table sounds as loud as hell .

i used to practise me bass guitar at me mums and hold the tunner end against the wardrobe door to amplifiy it well after a couple of months i had worn a hole in the door , vibrations who needs them!!!!! keep it clean .

Hi Johnny,
Right in the middle of moving my rack, its something I've been meaning to do for a while.
I have integrated not pre/power combo.
The amp hums even if no sources are connected. Its definately a transformer hum.
I have tried the amp on and off the slate plinth and no difference just too see if JB was right about the plinth amplifying it.
busy at the mo..

Thanks very much for the positive feedback on the ball/cup things. To be honest I don't think I've ever had any negative response from anyone who has used them, I even had one guy buy 4 sets from me after I gave him a set as a freebie.:) He was delighted with the results when used under amp or cdp and so was his brother, hence the sale.
I started making these out of interest after making some oak cones (due to greed I wasn't prepared to pay £25 for a set of these) ended up buying enough oak to make 32 sets of 3 for a tenner, that's 96 cones for £10 plus 4 at 50mm high. Gave them all away on HFC Forum if the person who received them gave a small donation to charity.
Then I had the idea of the ball/cup after seeing similar products for silly money, cost £4.95 or something for 15 ballbearings so I made my first 5 sets. I was pretty shocked at the difference I (thought) I could hear so took them along to a few bake-offs. The most jaw dropping improvement I/we heard was by using them under a Makintosh cdp to lift it off the floor.
This got a few people interested so I made some more when I could get machine time at work, once again the majority of these were given to people who had shown genuine interest. I'm pretty sure I still have 15 ballbearings kicking about somewhere and I will make more when work is a bit quieter (I work in a sub-contract machine shop and the oil industry seems to be going for it at the moment so it's not possible for the next 4 or 5 months)
Obviously there will be loads of nay-sayers spread around the forums but mine cost me very little money and I like what they do.
Anyway enough of my pish, heres a foatie............

I swear by the ball & cup type insulation devices.
Unfortunately most of mine cost a hell of a lot more than Chezi's & probably are not any more effective but still money well spent.
I had 3 sets of Aurios under my speakers (on a hardwood floor) and they worked a treat - just too expensive so replaced them with a pair of Voodoo plats 90% of the good stuff and since I got them for next to nowt, freed up £600 worth of bearing isolators.
On the humming amp front - daft not to try some form of these.
My step down tranny for my amps seems to love to resonate at the same frequency as my central heating -pita - bearing isolators cured this to almost nowt - spikes/cones only make it worse.
imo the heavier the gear you put on balls & cups, the better it works - light phonostages etc with heavy trannies at one end tend to just coup, fall over & f--k things up when they break cables- a big slab of wood or slate cures this though.

Had a pair of Jas audio graphite pucks under my Micromega Aria. They worked well. Seemed to sharpen up the sound. No longer have them though as i sold them when i got my Marantz.

Worth trying if you've got a reasonably light CD player.
