Sorry for the late reply.
The Nima works very well with the LP12. Some say it's the poor mans Aro but I disagree. Insight, clarity and bass weight all contribute to the pairing

Well, I was about to order a new armboard from the Funk Firm (well, at least try ;) ) anyway as I've been tweaking the rest of the turntable and I've still got that U-shaped piece of alloy (pseudo-Linn-cut) from before they started to work with sandwich composites there (to good effect, I understand)...
Really like to try a unipivot even if it goes against conventional wisdom on a wibbly wobbly suspended deck (but then again if it works on a Linn...).

John P
1st December 2009, 22:54
Hi Dougie
No, the Xerxes is sitting on a Custom Designs wall shelf (isolated glass and steel). Unlike the Linn, the Roksan has a suspended lower level. I have pitted this combo against a Linn LP12 and EKOS SE with the fancy Keel. I really have to say that the Roksan wins but decide for yourself.

Hmm, well that is a positive response. I really had no intention of arm upgraditus as I already have an Ekos Mk2 which to me sounds rather nice & the PU7 would have to beat it quite comfortably to even consider a change & perhaps even beat a s/h Ekos SE as they tend to go for considerably cheaper than new but not quite to PU7 costs.
It was only the mention at the September hi-fi show that i could actually hear one on MY deck that got me interested as it has had some rather fantastic reviews.
I have an amp more on my mind than any further TT improvements. All so much money & so little dosh :(
Go on Johnnie you know you want to lend me one

Thanks John, that's very good of you. Jan is fine for me. I'm in no rush but the dem would be interesting nonetheless.
I am Essex based & of late have took to rebuilding my Sondek myself since the emergence of John R's Sole & my lovely new plinth (even if I do say so myself). My nearest dealer whom I have not been to for an age is Rayleigh Hi-Fi (although my some amazement I bumped into Rob (the manager) on an installation at the same place I'd been called out to, just this Friday!) or The Audio File in Bishop Stortford where I got all my latest bits & bobs for ye oll Sondek.

Another completed deck. This deck was in a very sorry state, a real mess! Now updated to Xerxes 20+ standard. Nearly as good as mine!

Glad you have had a chance to try one m8
now you can see why every single customer that has demoed a pu7 has bought one :) *
* apart from kenny....no one knows how he can resist the temptation :)
Just spotted this...
resisted the temptation purely because my business went tits up, and the writing was on the wall for around 18 months before I closed down for good; and now I can't find a job. May have to sell up most of the hifi, and the guitars the way things are going now. :(
If I had the money, I'd order one like a shot.
was only pulling your leg m8
sorry to hear there is no luck in the job front...but keep a positive attude im sure things will get back on track soon m8

Rescued and sorted, this Lovely Thorens TD125MK2/SME 3009. Came from a bereavement and really needed to be put back to former glory. Works really well with Grado's reference cartridges.

I had one of those, best of the bunch with just the two sliding controls. A lovely deck.

Mono set up, Restored Thorens 124 MK II with AO cardas rewired Ortofon RMG309. Stereo set up Restored Garrard 301 with AO Kondo rewired SME 3012 series 1(A),
Both arms came alive after the rewiring, looking forward to hearing a 12" PU7 on the 301!

Many thanks for the compliment, Preference overall is a tough call. The 124 certainly has several features which make it more user friendly than the 301 (Detachable armboard, double platter system with clutch - built in strobe etc) . In terms of sound I personally prefer the 301. I understand the 301's sound is not to everyone's taste and I'm sure the debate will roll on, but fully serviced and tuned 301 in the right plinth delivers for me at least an exciting sound that makes the music sound alive...
If you're ever down in the SW you're more than welcome over, If johnnie ever finished building his castle / extension I'd love to bring one up - I really need to hear a 12" PU7 on a 301...

Hi, just looking at all the great pictures here and wanted to ask about the Nima shown in so many pictures.
Since they seem to work on a Linn suspended, would the Nima work good on a Thorens 125 ?
Any info appreciated,
Wayne in the US
