Help I haven't the faintest idea how it works! Do I need a strobe lamp?

Thanks for the kit by the way Johnnie although I haven't had a chance to use it yet as I'm waiting for the new plinth to arrive.

Chewie it should work with a fluorescent bulb (it will wok with others, but best with these) and use the 50hz ring.

I bought one of these
link (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/KeyStrobe-turntable-strobe-plus-Reference-Audio-disc_W0QQitemZ280330932967QQcmdZViewItemQQptZTurnt able_Parts_Accessories?hash=item280330932967&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1300|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A13 18)
and consider it money well spent.

STROBE DISC INSTRUCTIONSffice
<O:p
ALL strobes only work with light sources that flash @50hz normal lights(incandesant and halogen etc) will give you blurry results

if you use a FLOURESANT TUBE LIGHT or a 40 OR 60W energy saver bulb or a old cathode ray TV for example all these light sources will FLASH @50HZ UK and 60HZ USA ...only using these bulbs give you the correct light to check your turntable speed
<O:p
The strobe works in all countries---if the you are in uk for example our mains flash at 50hz so we use the outside marks on the strobe
if you live in USA for example then the mains there flashes @60hz and you would use the inside marks on the strobe disc
once you have established what marks to use switch the turntable on @33rpm with a record ON THE PLATTER and put the strobe on top of the record (the records weight will affect the results)
once you have the disc spinning at 33rpm the marks should appear stationary...if they move clockwise then the speed is too fast....and if the move anticlockwise then the speed is too slow
if its a belt drive and there is no adjustment of speed then---cleaning the belt (or renewing) can make the platter revolve faster...also new main bearing oil can often reduce drag
...and if its too fast then putting some talcum powder on the belt can slow it down a little or even more weight on the platter like a heavy record clamp
