What a great band... anyone else a fan?

My favourite albums are Pungent Effulgent and Curious Corn, but Erpland is close behind...

been to see them live a couple of times... great stuff :)

yeah, its a good un. a return to form after the one before, "Spirals in Hyperspace" IIRC, which was a bit disappointing for me....

Their back catalogue seems to be generally available at very low prices these daysincluding double album packs - don't forget to have a look at their DVD "at the Pongmaster Ball"sound quality's poor though, so not a full price buy:(

the CD is not bad...

The vitamin enhanced box set, now released as 3 doubles is a bit patchy, but as they were originally cassette only early releases it's understandable. the Afterswish compilation never really managed to capture the best of these albums either.

I guess i`m a fan, i always thought i could detect the work of Steve Hillage in the tentacles, they recorded a lot of this quite near me here in the goglands.

Oh yes, lots of Hillage,Gong influence and a touch of Hawkwind.

Now a band I've been listening to for a good few months is Hidria Spacefolk.

The Prof and I have come to the same conclusion that they are possibly better than Ozrics, certainly more varied,a bit more proggy.

Certainly worth checking out if your a prog fan or an Ozrics fan or even a Hillage fan.

I had a sneaky listen to them at the last bakeoff. I've got mixed feelings about them (or at least the tracks i heard). Praps someone could bring some along to the next bakeoff? Wouldn't mind a further listen. (oh and the tracks i heard weren't Floydy )

I once was a roadie for hawkwind before they chucked out Lemmy kilmister, we used to call them "parrots breath"

Lemmy was not amused.

Have to agree, the spacefolk are far better IMHO, although I like the ozrics, I can't get through a whole album without changing it for something else, whereas the spacefolk you would spin again, and again, I have recently discovered Can, and can say that listenig to them it's obvious how many they have influenced, shades of, VU, Chilis, Ozrics and many others, Can at times can be hard going, but they are well worth sampling IMHO.:mullet

pretty much the same for me thronobulaxx may have more got hooked on the Oz Tents only about 2 years ago and went mad and got pretty much the whole back catalogue on the cheap between HMV and record fares

Seconded (Thirded?) - think I have 13 or 14 of their albums now as well as the DVD.

Hmmm - will NEED to check out the spacefolk as well, won't I. Echoing many others, this place is going to be expensive!

Been listening to Balansia by Hidira spacefolk on and off for a couple of months.

my conclusion is that it's great proggy rock, but not a patch on the Ozrics in terms of crossing boundaries, stretching the listener or invoking images.

yes it's foot tapping, rocky stuff, perhaps technically better played than the Ozrics can muster, but to meit's like being served a musical Korma instead of a Jaipuiri. nice enough, but doesn't grab me in the way that the Ozrics can.

it does sound a bit like the ozrics of 20 years ago (circa the first two cassettes, Erpsongs (RED cover) and Tantric Obstacles (Orange Cover) ) and there are times when I would choose it over an ozrics album, but for sheer scope of genres and diversity, Ozrics do it for me.

Recently bought Pungent Effulgent and Strangeitude. I still like the floor is too far away best but strangeitude is a close second.

The Cassette Releases

Erpsongs
Tantric Obstacles
Live Ethereal Cereal
There Is Nothing
Sliding Gliding Worlds
The Bits Between The Bits

(Also released as a box set, "Vitamin Enhanced" and as 3 2CD sets)

These are quite patchy, but there are some great moments on them. the weakest IMO is the Live one.

theres a few great tracks that stand out such as Spiral Mind from Erpsongs, plus early versions of tracks that would re-appear elsewhere (O-I, from Tantric Obstacles reappearing later on Pungent effulgent) or lifted straight as bonus tracks.

Most of the recordings are a bit ropey in terms of quality, having been recorded in Ed Wynne's attic studio (apparently) but there is a lot of excellent music that would otherwise have been missed. all the ingredients of later ozrics are there - drawing on world influences, tracks based around keyboard sequencer riffs.

A proportion of this material was re-issued as part of the Afterswish 2CD compliation, but inevitably, the complier of any project condensing 6 discs into 2 always misses at least one personal favourite out, so owning these is a must for any die-hard ozric tentacles fan.

Fortunately these have been issued as 3 2CD sets Tantric Obstacles/Erpsongs, There is Nothing/Live Ethereal Cereal and Bits Between the Bits/Sliding Gliding Worlds

Yep. the emotions do that ;)

Floors too far away is a return to form after a poor couple of albums IMO
