Default Mike Gordon - Green Sparrow

For his second solo album, Mike Gordon plays it a little straighter than his debut. The Green Sparrow is never as strange as moments of Inside In, favouring instead a set of laid back rocking tunes that really flow nicely together. Aside from just a few full band cuts, Gordon handles most of the instruments besides drums, but he executes that so well you wouldn't notice unless you checked the credits. There's an easygoing vibe throughout, even towards the end when the subject matter has a slightly darker twist. Vocally, he sounds a little like classic Steve Miller with a relaxed delivery and an effortless melody mastery that make these tunes breeze by, and of course there's plenty of tasty guitar and bass playing. From the deeply rooted funk of Radar Blip to the rousing intricacies of Andelmans' Yard, from the spirited rock of Traveled Too Far to the punch of Another Door, The Green Sparrow is a playful album from an artist who continually reveals new layers of himself.
To be in my end of year top 10 for sure.
