I've got 29, Gold and Heartbreaker. All good albums, but I would say 29 is different to the other two. Much darker and atmospheric and a slow burner. The other two are more accessible and a bit "poppier" IMO. They're definitely all worth getting though.

    Thanks Ray

Have to say though as for being a grower, it "got" me right away, so perhaps the other stuff may not be MCOT?. I'll defo investigate this year.

No-one can fail to like Heartbreaker... it's fantastic (and cheap too!)

Gold - one of my favourite albums of all time

Demolition - patchy, but when it's good, it's VERY good

Rock n Roll - embarrassingly I like this - got universally panned - a contractual release knocked up in no time after Lost Highway refused to release Love Is Hell for being "too depressing" - very 80s rock

Love is Hell - fan's choice (not my favourite)

    Cold Roses - I LOVE this - quite close to 29, can be a bit same-y as it's a 2 disc

Jacksonville - not my bag really, quite enjoyable, lots of steel guitar which is the worst c'n'w invention ever (IMO obv.!)

29 - great! (in a "I hate myself and I want to die" kinda way)

Easy Tiger - out today (????) - dunno yet! Reviews are favourable.

And I don't know any Whiskeytown which always comes up in conversation when talking about Ryan Adams

Try to get "Suicide Handbook" not officially released, but features acoustic versions of some of the Gold era songs plus other various tunes to make you want to top yourself - a masterpiece!

How's this sounding after a week?

A bit skint at the mo, but keen to know whether to buy it (I will at some point, but need some idea of urgency!)

    Ta!

I'd say burn 3 best cd's offs from 5 albums and say he's a genius but you can't please all the people all the time.
I can appreciate the songs that don't do it for me and the only other people that rock my boat when they're not really doing that? are Neil Young and the Beatles.
Only got into him recently - too lost in the mechanism and forgot to enjoy the music - feckin menopause I suppose:-(
I reckon I could just about say what song influenced which song but who cares when they are mostly so good.
Easy Tiger - ? sublime or a rehash of very good pop songs.
The quieter tracks loud are stunning, the louder tracks loud - are a bit too loud & busy for me, anyone suggest a producer - T Bone Burnet? maybe not but loosing the compression would make them far nicer albums methinks.

ps. lost highway vinyl is crap in most cases, crap pressings or a good imatation of Alton Towers - very much a shame.

Anyone see him in BBC 4 Session?
Like Welch & Rawlings, it came across as way better than the albums(much as I love them) imo.
I remember struggling up the cobbles to Stirling Castle one wild and wet night(on crutches) and REM (very nice on vinyl)blew my mind!

Paul you really want to get into this lad. He has personal demons that will test even the devil but boy he can pen a tune and break your heart. I 'd go for Heartbreaker for your next purchase . I think you'll get it big time.

PS I have everything . I'm listening to Love is Hell right now.

The new EP with the Cardinals "Everybody Knows" is an absolute cracker!
It's a bit less eclectic than some of his albums
and a very nice listen imo of course

& the cost would tie in with the title no doubt :-)
A mofi best of would be cool if they picked the best.
How does he make everything sound so much less eclectic when he plays live?
Lets rock on this one but turn down the volume
    Enjoy must be nice.

Anyone wanting to get a cheap taste of Ryan Adams should order this from Amazon

Its an 8 track ep for £2.98 . Quality is excellent. Two new tracks and five live studio recordings . Its pretty stunning really. And track one is from the Easy Tiger album. No brainer really. The above reco is spot on.

After reading this thread I was intrigued so picked up Heartbreaker, Gold, Rock n Roll & Love is Hell. In a nutshell, I like them all but the latter two aren't things that I would want to hear every day. The first two are superb so thanks for the reco
