    compression works against gravity,tension works with it,so is inherently far more stable and easier to tune without any "rocking" motion

    Agree, but then Linn compound the problem and use conical springs, not being linear they are more likely to want to push out the wider weaker coils at the top, hence the side to side jiggle of the Linn.
