Default what Cart for Alphason Xenon

    Hello,

Just about ready to mount the Xenon on the SOTA sapphire but unfortunately destroyed my AT160ML in the process so now I need a new cart. Thoughts on a Denon DL103 for this arm? its about that much that I could afford at the moment. Cheers!

    'Every little helps.'

I think the denon 103 needs a lot of mass. What phono amp do you have? How about an old but classic Shure V15 III?

Preamp is an Audible Illusions 2D. Phono input Impedance is 47 kOhm.
I think I may be able to replace the stylus of the AT160.. body is in great shape

Buy the cheapest Rega cart, the Carbon, run this while you save for a better cart, then when you get the new one you'll hopefully have the benefit of the upgrade, I agree with J7 the 103 needs a lot of mass, it's also an OK cartridge, but don't believe the hype, it's no giant killer.

Can you still get the 160 stylus? If not, I think a few others fit that body. I've forgotten where you are based.

will pass on the 103..may end up with the ATN152LP stylus replacement for 140 USD for now. have an opportunity to pick up a Transfiguration Esprit or Spirit for around 300USD down the road. what "high end" new and used carts would you suggest for the xenon in 2-400 dollar range?

    Thank you!

Get the Spirit if you know the history, perfect match. If you don't know the history, walk away. But it ill make the 160 sound like a bright schreechy thing in comparison. At your budget there is no real benefit to going to an MC cart, if buying new buy the best sound for your buck, some great MM carts around 200-400USD and they'll all work well into your phonostage, they'll sound punchier too due to higher output and needing less boost from phonostage

I believe you can use pretty much any AT120/102P family needle but the ATN152LP, AT440MLb and ATN150MLX seem to be the closest match to the original stylus.

Never heard an DL 103 sound good and you donīt have the mass on this arm so donīt put your dollars on it.
If you find a new AT 150 MLX cart you should buy it , itīs a wery good Cart for the Money and sounds amazing.

I would suggest any of the following…

AT-F7 at a minimum, but even better Benz Micro Ace or Glider.

For DL103 to perform at its best you really need a minimum of 18g effective mass, e.g. an old broadcast arm like the AT 1009 or a purpose made PU7 perhaps. I've had great results with both.
